Don't fall for her because she won the Monk Vocal Competition—that's just resumè stuff. Swoon because she's turned the promise of such achievements into a few years' worth of dazzling local gigs, becoming a truly inventive working musician. Avoiding overstatement at every turn, Parlato has little problem blending into the fabric of her backgrounds or parlaying a string of subtleties into a declarative statement; you can hear both tacks on the new In a Dream. Rhythm fiends should know that syncopation is her BFF.
