NOT JUST A PICTURE

Create photo mash-up for museum status

The six artists taking part in the New Photography 2009 exhibit at the MOMA have nothing in common . . . well, perhaps just one thing: Walead Beshty, Daniel Gordon, Leslie Hewitt, Carter Mull, Sterling Ruby, and Sara VanDerBeek all have different viewpoints, methods, and pictorial modes, but they share an Edward Scissorhands–like technique of slicing up dissimilar images and colors to create breathtaking and ornate kaleidoscopes of art, from Gordon's Nude Portrait collage to Mull's Los Angeles Times Tuesday, August 5, 2008 acid trip. Tonight's party, with music provided by Andrew Kuo, gets you in on that process with a digital photo-booth that allows you to construct your own photograph. Creative dress is encouraged. (Isn't it always?)
