The opera finally gets fashionable
Artist E.V. Day was clueless when it came to her next big commission: the opera. But the higher-ups at the New York City Opera trusted Day's meticulous style of crafting the most fragile of garments in a grand and luminous way. Her installation, elaborately featuring 13 costumes from the Opera's historical archive—adorned for characters such as Don Giovanni, Mimi from La Bohème, and Cio-Cio-San from Madama Butterfly—are hung, almost as if the outfits were sculptures, throughout the atrium, by about 22 miles of fishing line. For the past several months, Day immersed herself in the figures by listening to a slew of CDs from these concertos: "I got so revved up by these characters," she said in a recent interview with the Times, "I wanted to reanimate those lives and give them a future form in the promenade." Free and open to the public only on November 6, from 5 to 9 p.m. The show will be on view to ticket holders of the NYC Opera for the fall and spring 2010 seasons.
