Indie-rock slow burner Thao Nguyen is slowly breaking via the old word-of-mouth channels thanks to her infectious, cheery sound; think Motown abandon filtered through new-millennial self-awareness. But as ecstatic as Nguyen is, she may seem downright demure next to the antics of the Portland Cello Project, a band of eight-or-so cellists as likely to break in to Salt-N-Pepa as Arvo Pärt.
