Dir. Michael Powell & Emeric Pressburger (1948). Technicolor was made for this luridly-hued backstage melodrama—a madly expressionist spectacle even in the context of the Powell-Pressburger oeuvre. A failure in the U.K. the movie achieved cult status when it opened in New York—the most acclaimed import since Roberto Rossellini’s antithetical exercise in neo-realism, Open City.
