BURTON’S BIG ADVENTURE

Tell ‘em Large Marge sent ya

Only Tim Burton could seamlessly take a stolen-bicycle caper and bring it to the Alamo, onto the set of a Twisted Sister video, and into a particularly hair-raising hitchhiking situation. Well that’s not totally true—Paul Reubens does deserve some credit. But it’s the poignantly perverse filmmaker who is the subject of MOMA’s new retrospective, Tim Burton, displaying some 700 pieces of Burton’s never-before-seen artwork and cinematic ephemera (opening November 22) and screening all 14 of his feature films. The film program, which includes Beetlejuice, Batman, Edward Scissorhands, and Sweeney Todd, starts November 18 with Burton’s first (and perhaps finest!) pic, 1985’s Pee-wee’s Big Adventure.
