Dir. Marcel L'Herbier (1927).
L'Herbier is a key figure in French silent cinema, although he continued doing interesting work well into the sound era. L'Argent, his greatest film, based on Zola, is a story of financial collapse at the stock exchange, shot throughout with expressive camerawork. At times, its visual sophistication seems to anticipate Antonioni and the Alain Resnais of Marienbad.
