The saxophonist shared the Jazz Gallery stage with Myron Walden a month or so ago, and he tore shit up. Great knots of sound, breezy lines continuously unfurling—Strickland puts pressure on himself to carry the ball and he's been gaining lots of yardage lately. His latest disc is an acclaimed trio date that will wind up on several 'Best of 2009' lists because its feistiness is equaled by its intellect. Want to hear how those qualities play out on the stand?
