CREATURE COMFORTS

Peter Fischli and David Weiss resurrect their animal avatars

We've long admired the films of Swiss artists Peter Fischli and David Weiss, in which they dress up in rat and bear costumes and go in search of adventures from Los Angeles to the Swiss Alps (The Point of Least Resistance, 1981, and The Right Way, 1983). Now, over 20 years later, Rat and Bear are back at the Matthew Marks Gallery (526 West 22nd Street) in Fischli and Weiss's new show, Sleeping Puppets, where you'll find the animal duo asleep on a pile of blankets, tired out from their journeys. The exhibition also includes Clay and Rubber (523 West 24th Street), a collection of their clay and rubber sculptures of everyday objects, and the monumental installation Sun, Moon and Stars (522 West 22nd Street), a pairing of 800 magazine advertisements that explores the color associations between, say, an ad for cat food and one for private airplanes. Curiouser and curiouser.
