Maria Schneider Orchestra

Big bands are having a heyday right now, and the imaginative composer's large ensemble is regularly cited as a prime prototype. That doesn't mean many younger groups can match Schneider's grace. It's her signature trait, and the way the gaggle of sectioneers and soloists unite to put some wind beneath her wings often has the feel of ballet: nimble and powerful. In the confines of a club, this band can be devastating.
