Mars Attacks!

Dir. Tim Burton (1996). This may not be the first Hollywood blockbuster based on a bunch of old bubblegum cards, but it’s the boldly hyperreal standard against which all subsequent endeavors will be judged. No effect is too tacky—flaming cows, transposed heads, flying saucers over Las Vegas. The ridiculously all-star cast has to compete for attention with a screenful of computer-generated Martians—quacking, eye-rolling cuties are as scene-stealing as they are lethal.
