Every day, you see the young things frowning pensively at the Chuck Closes in Modern Art, blasting Blonde Redhead through headphones while skulking through Arms & Armor, or just planting it alongside the Temple of Dendur and expertly brooding. So, a far-reaching culture scribe could posit, the Met is an ideal place to see the original weepy-time girl, Lesley Gore, whose 1963 teen-pop staple "It's My Party" was a tear-jerking ode to a lost boyfriend and his new trick named Judy. Soon after its release, Gore followed it with the much happier feminist hit "You Don't Own Me," which she'll undoubtedly belt tonight; she has since received an Oscar nomination for composing the Fame soundtrack, been a Batman villain, and become an ardent activist of LGBT rights. Take note, kids; it pays to get happy.
