PARTY ON

Pop starlet of the '60s celebrates anew

It wasn't in our Best Of issue, but here's a premium insider tip: The most popular place to be emo in New York is the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Every day, you see the young things frowning pensively at the Chuck Closes in Modern Art, blasting Blonde Redhead through headphones while skulking through Arms & Armor, or just planting it alongside the Temple of Dendur and expertly brooding. So, a far-reaching culture scribe could posit, the Met is an ideal place to see the original weepy-time girl, Lesley Gore, whose 1963 teen-pop staple "It's My Party" was a tear-jerking ode to a lost boyfriend and his new trick named Judy. Soon after its release, Gore followed it with the much happier feminist hit "You Don't Own Me," which she'll undoubtedly belt tonight; she has since received an Oscar nomination for composing the Fame soundtrack, been a Batman villain, and become an ardent activist of LGBT rights. Take note, kids; it pays to get happy.
