Rain Machine

As if vocalist-guitarist Kyp Malone didn't have enough creative space in TV on the Radio—who recently announced a year-long hiatus—he's gotten even more meditative, lyrically and musically, in his solo project Rain Machine. In lead single "Smiling Black Faces," he addresses racism head on and, more specifically, the murder of African-American New Yorker Sean Bell by policemen three years ago. Throughout Rain Machine's self-titled record, he plays hypnotic acoustic guitars and jangly sleigh bells (mostly by himself) to support his lyrics. Luckily, he has a talented touring band that can replicate the disc's hypnotic sounds, giving him room to get his words just right.
