SEND IN THE CLOWNS

You can't say Angie never tried

Angela Lansbury has got to be the most prolific (if not the only) 84-year-old on the Broadway scene. She delighted us with her kooky-psychic dance in Blithe Spirit earlier this year, but kookiness takes a backseat in the new revival of Sondheim's A Little Night Music, a lovely tale of mismatched couples in turn-of-the-last-century Sweden. Angie plays the wise old Madame Armfeldt, whose signature number, "Liaisons," offers a tryst history to rival even Michael Douglas's past. Speaking of, Mrs. Douglas, Catherine Zeta-Jones, makes her Broadway debut as Mme. Armfeldt's glamorously promiscuous daughter Desiree.
