What Time Is It There?

Dir. Tsai Ming-liang (2001). The poet laureate of Tapei’s urban anomie integrates Paris into his particular planet—the sense of urban solitude and geographical dislocation has affinities to the melancholy globalism mapped out by directors like Wim Wenders and Krysztof Kieçslowski, but Tsai is a comic minimalist. Filled with purposeful activity rendered gravely hilarious, his witty, wistful film is an epistemological inquiry that shoulders its philosophical burden lightly.
