HEY, STELLA!

Cate Blanchett tries to stay alive

Just how intense is a performance of the Sydney Theatre Company's A Streetcar Named Desire? In September, during the world premiere run in Sydney, Cate Blanchett had to leave in the middle of the show with a bleeding head because her co-star, Joel Edgerton, accidentally hit her with a radio. In case you haven't figured out who's playing who—Blanchett plays the deluded Southern belle Blanche DuBois opposite Edgerton as her boorish brother-in-law, Stanley Kowalski. When Blanche starts putting ideas in Stella's head about leaving the unstable Stanley, that's when the props start to fly. Staged by Norwegian actress and director Liv Ullmann, the production received raves from reviewers down under, especially for its immensely talented star, Blanchett. Here's hoping the cast can all get through the New York premiere at BAM in one piece.
Tuesdays-Saturdays, 7:30 p.m.; Wednesdays, Saturdays, 2 p.m.; Sundays, 3 p.m. Starts: Nov. 27. Continues through Dec. 20, 2009
