Thanksgiving may not seem like the most vegetarian- or vegan-friendly holiday, but several local eateries have created special Vegetarian Thanksgiving menus that'll give herbivores something to be thankful for. Counter, an East Village vegetarian bistro and organic bar, is hosting a four-course gourmet Thanksgiving dinner—sans turkey. The prix fixe menu features seasonal dishes like caramelized brussels sprouts and pumpkin soup, which, for an extra fee, can be paired with a range of organic, sustainable, and biodynamic wines. Kate's Joint, another East Village restaurant, offers a more recession-friendly Thanksgiving menu. For only $12.95, vegans and vegetarians can enjoy an "un-turkey" dinner with all the traditional fixings—mashed potatoes and gravy, yams, greens, and cranberry sauce. Red Bamboo, a café with locations in Brooklyn and Manhattan, is serving vegetarian versions of classic comfort foods, including three kinds of meatless meat (turkey, ham, or chicken), with sides like cornbread and stuffing.
