MACABRE ROCK

Take a tour of Kyle Jarrow's dark places

Those who prefer their musical theater replete with soppy sentiments and toothy smiles should steer clear of Obie-winning composer/lyricist Kyle Jarrow's oeuvre (A Very Merry Unauthorized Children's Scientology Pageant). Jarrow's favorite topics include ghosts, man-beast hybrids, serial killers, and cult leaders. A song from his latest show, The Whisper House, a collaboration with Duncan Sheik, boasts this cheery chorus: "When everything is done/And everything is said/Life is naught but pain/It's better to be dead." Cue dance break? In this evening at the 92nd Street Y, Jarrow and friends takes audiences on a tuneful tour of his dark places, performing songs from his theater works as well as those from his rock bands the Fabulous Entourage and Super Mirage.
