The current breakthroughs on the AIDS front are incredible—there are now drugs that prevent babies from contracting HIV through infected breast milk, and a "Test and Treat" program, underway in the Bronx, that continuously monitors communities in high-risk areas. But the fight is not over. On World AIDS Day, we gather to remember our loved ones who have tragically passed because of this dreadful disease and hope that, soon, our day of remembrance will be in celebration of a cure. Two major events are happening today, with a slew of others as well, beginning with a 24-hour vigil in which activists, volunteers, and those living with HIV and AIDS will read names continually at City Hall Park in Lower Manhattan. Also, the Gay Men's Health Crisis hosts a vigil at Judson Memorial Church on Washington Square South that will include the reading of names of those lost to AIDS, followed by speeches from community leaders and various diverse clergy, and will conclude with singing and refreshments.
