The next step in the sweaty, hipster marching band revolution finds form in Sunny Lain's Red Baraat, the joyous Brooklyn-based dhol 'n' brass outfit. Hot bhangra beats from traditional Punjabi wedding tunes, Bollywood numbers, chants, and new originals mingle like equally boisterous party guests in Barbes's deliciously packed back room. With a less-than-traditional trap drums and electric bass rhythm section, there's a New Orleans vibe, too, but that's probably just as much in the booze as in the beats. Calling it a party doesn't quite cut it-but when there's no room to march, that's probably the best word.
