In Japan, it’s not uncommon to see grown men with a collection of Hello Kitty dolls, or police signs with adorable bears on them. It’s all a part of the Japanese kawaii (cute) culture, but to an outsider, it can be, well, kind of creepy. Bessie Award–winning American choreographer Jeremy Wade explores the sinister side of kawaii in his latest performance there is no end to more. Presented by the Japan Society, the piece blends movement, text, animation, and videos of manga for a cynical look at the darkness that lurks beneath the culture’s fluffy façade. The work is performed by actor-dancer Jared Gradinger in collaboration with Brooklyn-based Japanese manga artist/illustrator Hiroki Otsuka. Post-performance discussion at the Friday show.
