Emma Rice stages a tryst at a railway station
What’s more British than tea cozies and bad teeth? Repression. At St. Ann’s Warehouse, the Cornwall-based company Kneehigh offers an ode to that most inhibited of films, David Lean’s 1946 weepie Brief Encounter. Kneehigh combines the film script with Still Life, Noël Coward’s one-act play that inspired it, as well as a bevy of Coward’s songs, to describe the unconsummated passion between a suburban wife and a dashing doctor, who enjoy brief encounters at a railway station. Their middle-class yearnings are offset by the more ribald antics of the railway café’s habitués. Director Emma Rice melds theater, film, and ice-cream-wielding usherettes to stage this chaste romance.
