If Sesame Street existed in real-time, beloved characters like Elmo and Big Bird would be crusty old men today. Luckily, the show that’s marking its 40th anniversary hasn’t aged a bit, and neither have its Muppets. But its audiences have, which means you’re old enough to raise a glass to this public television relic at BAMcinématek’s Sesame Street: A Celebration! The fun begins Saturday with screenings of 1985’s Follow That Birdand 2006 documentary The World According to Sesame Street. Today, follow Big Bird to China and then to the roof in wait of Santa, or sing along with Paul Simon, Johnny Cash, and R.E.M. during Sing! Sesame Musical Moments. For those not disturbed by the fact that there’s a person inside Snuffleupagus, keep on the lookout for puppeteers and other behind-the-scenes folks.
