Ball of Fire

Dir. Howard Hawks (1942). The great Barbara Stanwyck is, if possible, even more marvelous than usual as a brassy nightclub entertainer recruited by seven prissy professors to help in the writing of a dictionary of slang in Hawks's first-rate comedy, based on a sparkling Billy Wilder script, a sly variation on Snow White. This utterly charming picture illustrates a theme common to the director's movies—the need of his leading man to be loosened up by a spirited woman of the world.
