Brooklyn-based choreographer Reggie Wilson is fascinated by the way physical movement is used as language in African villages. As he recently told the Voice, "All the old women can raise one eyebrow and switch it to the other side, and move one ear around their heads twice. The body can't do that, you think, but they can do it." Studying in Dakar in 2002, Wilson met Congolese choreographer Andréya Ouamba, and the two soon began collaborating on The Good Dance, which opened December 16 at BAM. Performed by Wilson's Fist & Heel Performance Group and Ouamba's Compagnie 1er Temps, the high-energy piece, inspired by Wilson's roots in the Mississippi Delta and Ouamba's in the Congo, explores themes of migration and identity via an original "movement vocabulary" that's certain to be dazzling to watch.
