DARK THEATER

The haunting of P.S.122

"Dangerous," "mysterious," "sinister," "nightmarish," and "pretty frightening" are some of the words the press has used to tout many of the shows in P.S.122's 12-day COIL Festival of contemporary performance. This year's decidedly dark lineup of theater, solo performances, and dance covers topics such as mind control, Japanese horror videos, and the depiction of violence in graphic artist Jacob Landau's work. Gisèle Vienne's stage adaptation of Dennis Cooper's short story Jerk, about the accomplice of a Texas serial killer, even garners the warning that it's for mature audiences only. But the most chilling of all is the voice of the Vincent Price–like Edgar Oliver, who revives East 10th Street: Self-Portrait With Empty House, his deliciously creepy tale about his first apartment in New York City.
Mondays-Sundays. Starts: Jan. 6. Continues through Jan. 17, 2010
