The Brunch Report–Toad in a Hole at 5 Ninth

by

In these tough economic times, Sunday brunch can be the only splurge on a meal out in a place with real cloth napkins one can afford. So, we’ve decided to start bringing you The Brunch Report, a dispatch from the front lines of New York’s most hallowed Sunday tradition.

This week, we dropped by one of the only places we can stand in the MePa for one of our favorite brunch items: Toad in a Hole. We loved this as kids–because of the name, of course–and it’s still fun to order. We wish it looked more like a toad, but we’ve never seen one that has. 5 Ninth‘s was well made, with the egg housed in thick country fried bread, but accompanied only by a sad little salad, which left our adult-sized tummies not quite full. Luckily, the Bloody Mary, with its generous helping of freshly grated horseradish was the kind of drink you can chew.

We’ve also heard of the dish being referred to as Egg in a Basket and Pharaoh’s Eye, the latter of which we think sounds creepy.
