Get Pickled With Canning Across America

In a few short weeks, prime fruit and vegetable season will be over, and we’ll all be subsisting on bags of frozen corn and tins of tomato paste. But a group of food writers, chefs, and home cooks is trying to change that by promoting the cause of pickling, canning, and preserving with Canning Across America, a nationwide movement started to “promote safe food preservation and the joys of community building through food.” It’s scheduled to kick off this weekend with events around the country: There will be classes, demos, and home-canning parties. The website lists events by city and town, and avid canners are encouraged to break out the tongs and Ball jars and hold their own too.
