Broken Blossoms

Dir. D.W.Griffith (1919). This Griffith classic, if not his most famous, surely his most beautiful film, is arguably the first successful outright tragedy in American movies. Its intimate story of forbidden love inolves waif (Lillian Gish, superb) who lives with her brutal father in the sordid Limehouse quarter of London, and a handsome young Chinese man (Richard Barthelmess). The difficult subject is handled with force and discretion and represents Griffith at the top of his abilities.
Wednesdays-Fridays, 1:30 p.m. Starts: Jan. 6. Continues through Jan. 8, 2010
