Chris Potter Underground

This year's debate over which jazz ensembles could effectively woo a twentysomething crowd often had pundits pointing to this crew. The frenzied unk-fay created by the saxophonist's foursome relies on the kind of swing that couches itself in kinetics—Potter's tension and release tactics are pretty much syncopation city. That's why there's a glorious push 'n' shove vibe in the air when they truly hit their stride. The friction between Craig Taborn's keybs and Nate Smith's drums throws everything into a tizzy. Is that a term twentysomethings use?
