Go around the world in just one day

GlobalFEST 2010, the annual Association of Performing Arts Presenters event, crams a world of music onto three stages in full effect all night long, with reliably bracing results. Intrepid listeners can catch up to a dozen international acts ranging from Romania’s Nightlosers, who combine American blues with Transylvanian folk music (and feature a poplar-leaf player who mimics screaming lead guitar), to Saiyuki, a blend of French-Vietnamese guitarist Nguyên Lê’s hot licks with Japanese koto and Indian tabla. Latin America is robustly represented by savvy Argentine romantic Federico Aubele, local hard-salsa revivalists La Excelencia, and the compelling Colombian coastal rhythms of La Cumbiamba eNeYé. Promising newcomers include gentle Burkina Faso acoustic singer-songwriter Alif Naaba and the shamanic Siberian vocalist Namgar. And gypsy-jazz revivalists Caravan Palace fill this GlobalFEST edition’s seemingly obligatory Parisian-kitsch slot.
