The Fire Within

Dir. Louis Malle (1963). One of the rare indisputable successes in Malle's spotty career, this adaptation of Drieu La Rochelle's novel about the final hours of an alcoholic whose life is gradually revealed to us from remarks by his friends, has a dimension mostly lacking elsewhere in the director's oeuvre. The portrait of Parisian society is trenchant and unsparing.
