Similar to the way the two-member band the Postal Service created its hit song (by mailing it back and forth to each other), painter Laura Bell and poet Ian Ganassi have created more than 200 works of art, with Ganassi scrawling phrases on stained sheets and mailing them off to Bell, who added her images. Today, they will discuss their unique project at Illuminating the Text, a talk and reading exploring the ways that poets, artist, and authors—both past and present—have inspired each other. The event is part of the group show Disciplined Spontaneity, which includes works by John Cage and Sol LeWitt, among others. Today's program also includes the Voice's own art critic and esteemed artist R.C. Baker, discussing such artist/writer collaborations as R. Crumb's take on Genesis and Philip Guston's bold graphics for Clark Coolidge's poetry. And, in keeping with the collaborative spirit, everyone who attends is encouraged to add their insights to the discussion.
