Halfway through his song "Midnight Surprise," Lightspeed Champion sublimely croons, "Wake up, smell the semen." And so go many of the other lyrics throughout his 2008 debut, Falling Off the Lavender Bridge: Sugarcoated depravities wrapped up in dreamy quasi-country indie rock. Everything about Lightspeed Champion—who. incidentally. is a former member of the equally libidinously-named Test Icicles—is meant to challenge perception. At one New York performance last October, he even dressed as a wizard for seemingly no reason. One can only imagine what treats lie between the lines of his forthcoming album, Life Is Sweet! Nice to Meet You. With Spacecamp and Brahms.
