MoB just get better with age
No one is happier to see Mission of Burma hit their 30th year than Mission of Burma—and no one is a truer and bluer fan than the band themselves, as their sound gets more triumphant and fun with each passing LP. With last year's The Sound The Speed The Light, the greatest punk band to ever trickle down from Boston (unless you count the Cars as a punk band), they've officially released more records in reunion mode than they did in their pioneering 1979–1983 run. And instead of devolving a cleaned-up, post-indie version of their wonked-out Wire-meet-Stockhausen anthems, they've become every Burma fan's dream: The punk parts are punkier, their dissonance more dissonant, the academy fight songs more fighty. For all you youngsters, just imagine the Thermals with better pedals, better record collections, and a dedicated sound guy—actually, for all you old folk worrying about whether you should leave the house, imagine that, too. Tonight is the first of two nights at the Bowery Ballroom, with openers Freshkills, who have that mid-'90s post-Burma vibe of bands like Jawbreaker and Quicksand. Tomorrow's show features the decidedly more "mersh" local indie-rockers the Dig.
