'A Night of Haitian Rara'

Planned long before the January 12 earthquake, this evening celebrates the richness of Haitian culture, particularly the brash drums and bamboo-horn parade music called rara. The occasion is the recently released, lavishly packaged reissue of Alan Lomax's 1936-37 Haiti field recordings, which will be presented by ethnomusicologist Gage Averill. A documentary, The Other Side of the Water, will be screened at 9, followed by kinetic local rara group Djarara, who sneak T.I. quotes into their traditional tumult. Donations will benefit earthquake relief efforts.
