A good soul man is hard to find—and harder to accept if he comes from the Dead Science, one of the more eccentric new wave experimentalists in the local scene. Yet their lead singer, Sam Mickens, now of Sam Mickens' Ecstatic Showband & Revue, more than convincingly applies his eerily light tenor and endless tremulous vibrato to a full r&b revival backing band, and the result is just as exciting as his other troupe. More foreboding than Curtis Mayfield, more aggressive than Mayer Hawthorne, these brass-and-reeds shenanigans are the perfect foil for the restless Mickens. With D. Rider and Whales & Cops.
