When you see a group of, say, lawn gnomes pushing a shopping cart down a Brooklyn side street and throwing "gnome poop" at other people pushing shopping carts, there can be only one logical explanation: The Idiotarod has returned. Inspired by the famous sled-dog race in Alaska, the Idiotarod has teams of five, decked out in bizarre costumes, pushing shopping carts (often rather drunkenly) over rugged city terrain while attempting to sabotage their fellow idiots by throwing marbles, rocks, or, yes, gnome poop in their path. Prizes are awarded at the end of the evening for categories like Best Costume and Best Sabotage. The game takes place every year, with the starting point kept under wraps until close to racing day.
