Dir. Sergei Eisenstein (1928). Commissioned to make a film celebrating the 10th anniversary of the 1917 revolution, Eisenstein created a bold and thrilling experiment in montage, not the anticipated rousing spectacle with the popular appeal of Potemkin, capable of energizing the proletariat. Its reception was less than enthusiastic—many found it hard to follow. It remains a one-of-a-kind major work, filled with breathtaking sequences.
