DRUMS FOR PEACE

Korean folk soothes the universe

Samulnori music, a type of Korean rural percussion, is said to bring order to the cosmos by uniting yin and yang. That serenity could be well-employed in New York, where the urge to kill is always rising, so we welcome Noreum Machi, one of Korea's premier contemporary troupes of ancient p'ungmul nori music. Bandleader Kim Juhong provides a modern spin to the traditional fare with danceable flourishes and technical expertise that reflects his studies under pre-eminent folk musician Kim Duk Soo.
