Female garage rock finds a mating call in the subterranean sleaze of California lo-fi quartet Dum Dum Girls, which makes their pairing with former Vivian Girls/Crystal Stilts drummer Frankie Rose's new side project (let's see how long this one lasts) nearly perfect. Yet the cotton-candied female punk rock doesn't stop there—Vermont's Happy Birthday pull off a Stone Roses-via Shangri-Las vibe, thanks to their feminized growlings, sure to be labeled as the next Girls (with an actual girl in the band this time!), while Brooklyn duo Coasting make tracks such as "Pussy Bow" and "Hots For Teacher" the stuff of a Sleater-Kinney reunion. Run, don’t walk, to this one. Girl gangs need love too.
