"Leave it to an Irishman to write one of the greatest-ever novels about New York," said author Dave Eggers about Colum McCann's 2009 National Book Award–winning Let the Great World Spin. McCann, who lives in the city and is on the faculty of Hunter's MFA Creative Writing program, did extensive research on 1970s New York to weave together a compelling story about a disparate group of characters united by Philippe Petit's daring 1974 tightrope walk between the World Trade Center towers. This is being publicized as McCann's only free reading and book discussion in the city. Indeed, if you can't make this, for $19 you can see him at the 92nd Street Y (1395 Lexington Avenue) in conversation with author John Banville on February 24.
