A doe-eyed heroine, a devilish cobbler, and ruby slippers that make the wearer dance herself to death—Powell and Pressburger's The Red Shoes is no horror flick, but it did give cinema enthusiasts a fright when nitrate negatives of the film were threatened by deterioration. A devoted fan of the 1948 classic about a dancer caught in the battle between life and art, Martin Scorsese rallied a team of five nonprofits to embark on a two-year preservation effort. The result is a stunning 35mm restoration that intensifies the already vibrant hues of the original Technicolor photography. The revival also features some seriously masterful choreography that will make everything you've ever seen on Dancing With the Stars look like a telecast version of the electric slide at your junior prom. It returns to the screen tonight, back at the Film Forum by popular demand, to kick off a one-week run. Thelma Schoonmaker, wife of the late director Michael Powell, introduces tonight's 7 p.m. show, with a restoration comparison demonstration.
Fri., Feb. 19, 1, 3:45, 7 & 9:35 p.m., 2010
