Ladies, look but don’t touch: Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears may be the second coming of James Brown, with those infectious funk yelps and hyper-catchy blues riffs, but they are not gonna be contenders for World’s Greatest Boyfriends. Case in point: “Get Yo Shit,” in which darling Lewis begs his girlfriend to stay by listing his top romantic achievements: forgetting her name, eating her chicken, going on the lam—and he does this with such ardor, even Aretha Franklin would probably let him back in the house. Maybe there is something to be said for a self-effacing man; the group was one of the breakout artists of last year’s SXSW and have opened for Little Richard, Spoon, and Okkervil River. With Cedric Burnside, Lightnin’ Malcolm, and the Black Hollies.
