The Whitney Biennial, a massive survey of all thats new and cutting-edge in contemporary American art, is scaling back from its sprawling 2008 show that included 81 artists in two locations. Due to the dour economic times, this years show, which is themed 2010, could also have been themed Less is more, featuring just 55 artists in one location, the Whitneys Marcel Breuer building. Theres less noise around, Italian-born curator Francesco Bonami said in an interview with The New York Times. The new generation seems less obsessed with big. They have more human-scale attitudes. The talented group of new artists include painter Tauba Auerbach, draftswoman Aurel Schmidt, and wacky art collective The Bruce High Quality Foundation. Veteran artists showing include visual artist George Condo and sculptor Charles Ray.
