PARTY LIKE A PERSIAN

Cast your lot with any of these Purim celebrations

When did Purim become the coolest Jewish holiday ever? (Sorry, Shavuot . . .) The one day a year that kids go to Hebrew School dressed in clown costumes is all grown up now, and New York is home to a smattering of adult parties honoring the annual recitation of the Scroll of Esther. At 92Y Tribeca, the Purim Party 2010 features a Purim spiel by The Shushan Channel, an original play created by comedy writers from The Daily Show, the Tonight Show, and 30 Rock. Lizz Winstead stars, and Joel McHale and Andy Richter make an appearance via video. Heeb magazine joins forces with 3rd Ward for the Pour ‘em Party, which commemorates Jewish victory in ancient Persia in the most traditional way possible—by getting everyone drunk (free Colt 45 from 9 to 10 p.m.). And City Winery and Storahtelling offer Bloody Esther, a “radical retelling” of Purim by the so-called “First Lady of Judeo Kitsch,” Hadassah Gross—as if a story about attempted genocide with feminist undertones could get any more radical. Purim Party 2010 at 8 & 10, 92Y Tribeca, 200 Hudson Street, 212-601-1000, 92ytribeca.org, $20–$30; Bloody Esther at 8, City Winery, 155 Varick Street, 212-608-0555, citywinery.com, $25; Pour ‘em Party at 9, 3rd Ward, 195 Morgan Avenue, Brooklyn, 718-715-4961, 3rdward.com, $10–$15
