Alice in Chains

Alice in Chains is sometimes unfairly maligned as "hard rock for numbskulls" by folks who can't see past the sludgy distortions, but their mid-'90s songs were easily among Seattle grunge's most sophisticated—particularly those with intricate acoustic arrangements and unpredictable harmonies. All of the above came courtesy of madcap-genius guitarist Jerry Cantrell, who decided to regroup and soldier on after the fatal overdose of frontman Layne Staley in 2002, recruiting shameless sound-alike William DuVall for last year's attempted comeback album Black Gives Way to Blue. For that, one might malign them quite fairly. With Middle Class Rut.
