Toto the Hero

Dir. Jaco van Dormael (1991). The first film of Belgian director Dormael, a former circus clown, is a winning blend of kid's fantasy and adult comedy. Deliciously offbeat, it kicks off in intriguing fashion as talented French actor Michel Bouquet, in a hospital bed, harbors dreams of a murderous revenge on his childhood buddy who "stole" his life. The dreamily surreal flick is full of neat twists as the director unravels the complex story with great invention and shows a fine talent for absurdist comedy.
