Jules Feiffer began cartooning for the Voice in 1956 and, over the course of his career, has won a Pulitzer, an Oscar, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Writers Guild of America, a George Polk Award, and many more statues. Clearly, the Voice is the path to greatness. Or it could be a combination of things, like growing up with learning disabilities and an overbearing mother, being drafted into the Army, and having a knack for scrawling witty and relevant editorial cartoons that, as Art Spiegelman says, "[express] the whiny child in every adult and the world-weary sophisticate inside every kid." Feiffer's new graphic memoir, Backing Into Forward, details his journey from a "smart-ass into an enraged satirist." The multi-award-winning legend will be speaking and signing copies at the Strand tonight.
