Danilo Perez

The pianist was part of Gillespie's acclaimed United Nations Orchestra and enjoyed a front-row seat on the inventive way the trumpet maestro lassoed rhythmic aspects of the African Diaspora. Perez's update melds players from the Caribbean, Middle East, and India to address a wham-bam songbook that stretches from "Con Alma" to "Salt Peanuts." The group is chock with killer soloists (Sanchez, Mahanthappa) and driven by a gleefully pliable rhythm section. Expect strength: They've got a few weeks of tour dates under their belt.
